Fruita, Colorado offer chapped lips, bruised hips & huge dips
October 15, 2003 on 8:40 pm | In Mountain | No CommentsWe rolled into Fruita and went straight to Over the Edge Sports. Jeremy provided us with a nice little map that showed us where to go. They have riding on both sides of I-70. Apparently, like so many trails out west, they are in danger of being closed.
Go to the Over the Edge Bikes website to get complete trail information, and find out what you can do to save these incredible trails.
We rode Mary’s loop, Horsethief Canyon, Steve’s Loop and Moore Fun. Very fast and fun! Moore Fun was the highlight. It is the most technical desert riding we’ve ever seen. Despite all the years of hype we’ve heard about Fruita, these easterners are still glad to ride the east every day.
Brian Head Utah… wow.
October 14, 2003 on 8:34 pm | In Mountain | No CommentsFrom Cedar Breaks National Monument, we spied a structure high on a northern Mesa. After a mellow yoga session, we drove up to it.
Without a trail map, or any time restrictions, we made lunch at the old shelter built by the CCC in 1936. As we were suiting up, an number of locals drove into the lot and affirmed we were in the right place. Of the 3 car loads we talked with, all were doing shuttle runs. WIMPS!
We headed down from the 11,306 ft summit of Brian Head and ripped down the back side of the mesa on the Marathon Trail, down the Lowden Ponds Trail and back on Dark Hollow Trail. The loop was probably about 15 miles. The riding was decent, but so much like the desert riding we’d been doing that we got a bit bored with it. The huge views and challenge of riding at 10,000+v/ft were the big redeemers.
If you go to Brian Head, bring your sunscreen and map, because exposure and non-descript terrain set the scene for the riding.
